Focusing on passion and fun will make the glow of Valentine's Day last beyond February 14th. EcoDiva: Your clothing and brand imaging have a very interesting and specific look. What does your logo and company name symbolize? Roxi: The wings… I did not plan to do an angel-themed collection. I first created the logo and the name of the company, ANGelRox, because I have a friend named Angel. We spent a lot of time together and started being referred to as Angel-Rox. It all seemed to fit together. The name, to me, symbolizes balance and finding one’s center of joy. Our company philosophy, ‘May Peace Prevail’, refers to inner peace. There is something about wearing wings that makes you want to be good and kind to others. The wings in the logo were inspired by a statue of St. Michael from a cathedral in uptown NYC. 13
<a10:updated>2009-02-13T16:28:14+01:00</a10:updated>

Ecozine Issue #1 Page 14

Roxi Suger, founder and designer of ANGeLRox. Sexy and ethical luxury clothing for women. ANGelRox defines sizes by a beautiful word. For small sizes, look for BIRD. Medium-sized ladies can choose WING, and large sizes choose SONG. For the fabulous XL, choose JOY. EcoDiva: There are many roads a designer can take when creating a business. One of those paths is to create a company that honors the earth and its future. Tell me about your personal journey to choosing green. Roxi: My background is in fashion. I worked with companies like Urban Outfitters and Vivienne Tam. I worked with direct retailers as well as designers. Fifteen years ago I wanted to start a hemp line. But it was too early in the life of hemp fabric. Back then it was not comfortable, it had no versatility. In 2000 I branched out and self-financed my clothing line. We are staffed by my husband, interns and myself. We now have a loyal following of customers. When my son Cotton was born, I was already on an organic path in my personal life. A green business was the natural choice for me. EcoDiva: The market is now chock full of a new crop of designers choosing green and eco-friendly as a tag line and a philosophy. In this busy and growing market, what makes your clothing unique? Roxi: My signature pieces are on a continuum and my customers appreciate that. True style is sustainable; it’s not about following the latest trends. The color palette tends to stay neutral and wearer-friendly. The clothes are not meant to have a short life span. You could say that I’m anti-trend. I redesigned the jeans without a structured waistline or zipper and added nylon mesh. This has a thinning effect for the abdomen area. It gives a sleek look without adding the bulk of typical jeans. When women are pregnant, they don’t have to go and buy separate maternity jeans that they will only wear for a few months. This is a new and comfortable way for women to wear jeans. I had Sharon Stone’s support for my clothing; she purchased the denim blazer through the Giving Suite at the Sundance Film Festival. SEXY APPE OF THE F The advantag bamboo 14
<a10:updated>2009-02-13T16:28:14+01:00</a10:updated>

Ecozine Issue #1 Page 15

Ethical luxury is a union of design and business. GREEN MEETS A LEVEL OF SOPHISTICATED, DETAILORIENTED STYLE THAT RISES ABOVE A PASSING SEASONAL TREND. Ethical luxury is about creating a something that endures. Roxi Suger does just that with her line of ethereal and stunning designs, which honor the earth and the female body at the same time. ANGelRoX creates sexy, clean, beautiful lines for a woman as she walks through life. EcoDiva: When it comes to running your business, what are your some of your “green” practices? Roxi: We are researching organic cotton to incorporate into the clothing. We use cotton, bamboo and some rayon. Rayon is derived from cotton and is a natural-based fiber. It is made from reconstituted wood pulp. The wood shavings (left from projects) are broken down into a liquid, made into a pulp and then into a fabric. The bamboo tree is a rapidlygrowing source. The only negative is the processing that it takes to become a useable fiber. The advantage to using bamboo for high fashion is the luxury look and the sexy appearance of the fabric. EcoDiva: Why is it important to you to consider eco-friendly choices in your designs and business? Roxi: I teach fashion at Parsons, and I always communicate to the students the importance of being environmentally responsible in their choices. I highlight the use of remnant fabrics and non-wasteful practices. My personal ethic is that I hate to throw things away when I can re-purpose them. This is respected by my customers. Fashion tends to be a high-waste industry. I always re-use my cutaway fabric in fun ways. EcoDiva: You are doing some incredibly beautiful work and creating a sexy, sensual line of clothing. What are your future plans? Roxi: I want to continue to grow in a grassroots way. I will layer in additional pieces that will round out a woman’s wardrobe. These are simple, basic items to wear and still look different. I want to keep finding those pieces that work with my philosophy. ANGelRox is an expression of who I am and where I am going. I live in Brooklyn, NY now, but I grew up in Oklahoma. I've had a wide range of life experiences. As a result, I now have a collection that spans different ages and ethnicities – it’s a real joy for me. Had enough of trying to live up to impossible beauty standards and the pursuit of “perfection?” It’s time for a beauty revolution. Throw down those skinny jeans. Quit dissecting your body. Stop trying to continually recalibrate your self-image and start embracing your imperfection. What do those self-confident, selfassured women know that you don’t? Here’s the secret… beauty lies in your flaws and your glorious uniqueness. Our ability to put forth something genuine and embrace our authentic selves (flaws and all) is far more beautiful than trying to be something that you are not. You’ve absolutely got to love your imperfection no matter what. When you embrace your whole self, you liberate yourself from limiting beliefs, self-doubt and the myth of perfection. This allows you to make better choices, have healthier relationships and head down the path to becoming the type of woman you really want to be. It’s easy to join in with your friends and agree that you too feel bad about eating ice cream today or skipping the gym. But our true strength and our true beauty lie in our ability to maintain our sense of self even when it means going against the crowd. Those women who accept their imperfections, who aren’t afraid to use their voice, who stand up for who they are right now and who they are trying to become are the ones who shine. These are the women who deserve to be admired. Realize that only you have the power to believe that you are beautiful, bold, courageous, brilliant, and perfectly imperfect. So go ahead, define for yourself what is means to be a Real Beauty. It’s easy to go along with the crowd; easy to judge others and ourselves based on outward appearance, numbers and measurements. You have only this lifetime to be the person you imagine yourself to be. What a tragedy it would be to waste that lifetime striving to be something you are not. What do you want your contribution to be? Certainly it is far deeper than shapes and sizes and inches and numbers. Once you celebrate all the pieces of you, you open yourself up to succeed in ways you never thought possible. SELF CONFIDENT? You are beautiful, bold, courageous, brilliant, and PERFECTLY IMPERFECT. - Lori Fields Real Beauty Is…™ bold, courageous, perfectly imperfect www.realbeautyis.com 17
<a10:updated>2009-02-13T16:28:14+01:00</a10:updated>

Ecozine Issue #1 Page 18

eco-life By Lynn Colwell and Corey Colwell-Lipson BRAIN SEX 4 simple brain-pleasing tips for a permanent glow for you, your partner, and the planet. Amorous gifts, sweet sentiments and tender touches - the traditions de jour - make all those who celebrate feel oh-so-good. So good, in fact, that you may want to feel like this forever. YOU CAN. THE SECRET? By stimulating the brain’s pleasure center and flooding it with “feel good” hormones you’re likely to experience V-day-like euphoria and contentment– no matter what time of year. Try these four simple, surprising, brain-pleasing ideas to make that Valentine glow a permanent fixture for you, your partner and your planet. #1 Bring on the chocolate. It’s no wonder the Aztecs associated chocolate with Xochiquetzal, the goddess of love and pleasure, and why it is the #1 food craved by American women. Eating chocolate stimulates the secretion of euphoria-inducing neurotransmitters and chemicals associated with feelings of love. If, during any three random minutes, he sees a picture of a naked woman, thinks about a naked woman, or crawls into bed with a naked woman, he’s hotter than The Everglades in August. For the typical woman, however, the story is much different. It takes about 24 hours of romantic foreplay for a woman to become aroused. By foreplay, I’m not talking about hugging, kissing, and caressing— although all of that is perfectly fine, especially during the final few minutes of the 24-hour period. No, I’m talking about Random Acts of Sexiness – about all of the things that a man can do to make his woman feel loved, accepted, important and, most important, sexy. Problem is, plenty of unsexy things can take place during any typical 24-hour period, which is why sex often goes the way of the flat tummy in so many long-term relationships. How do you get your guy to perform more Random Acts of Sexiness and fewer Random Acts of Sex Sabotage? In a word: communication. Tell him what you want, and what you don’t. He eats whatever you’ve made for dinner and declares it a 5 star gourmet creation that the world’s pickiest foodies would adore. He rubs your feet, without expecting a foot rub (or any other kind of rub) in return. He whistles when he sees you getting dressed or undressed. He brings you coffee or tea in the morning. He has a random day off. He spends half of it cleaning the house and the other half fixing everything that’s broken. You get dressed up for a special occasion. He tells you he’s never seen you looking more beautiful. He leaves his empty beer bottle by the recliner. You are cooking dinner. He says, “Don’t you think the burner is on too high? I think you’re going to burn it again.” He’s in the mood, so he starts to rub your thigh with his hand. He passes a violent amount of gas, and then he asks whether you’d like to have sex. He leaves the toilet seat up, so you fall in and get your butt wet first thing in the morning. He’s late, and he doesn’t bother to call. You mention it later, and he says, “Do you have to be such a ball and chain?!” You get dressed up for a special occasion. He says, “That dress makes you look fat. Their impact on the planet will be better after a stay at Stowe. There are recycled paper products in each room, and all sheets and robes are made from bamboo. Over half of the power used by the resort comes from sustainable resources. Recycling programs are in place throughout the lodge and spa – which was actually constructed from local granite and recycled steel. Guests travel around the resort via walking paths, a trolley system, and a transfer lift so carbon emissions are kept to a minimum. The Spa itself used the backdrop of the beautiful mountains to its advantage. It is easy to see how the colors, textures and materials reflect Vermont’s natural beauty. The Spa strives to incorporate as many natural and organic ingredients as possible. It’s apparent that the clean and natural environment of the resort shines through in the treatments as well. 28 My visit to the Stowe Mountain Lodge affirms the fact that luxury can be eco-friendly. The Vermont resort is a perfect “green” getaway within an idyllic setting, and is an easy trip from both Boston and New York. The environmentallyconscious Stowe became the very first mountain resort to win the Sustainable Community award from Audubon International. The resort is taking its commitment to the environment a step further and is now pursuing Audubon’s Green Leaf Eco –Rating for hotels. I have no doubt the Lodge will achieve that distinction soon. Stowe Mountain Lodge sits on conservation land amongst the picturesque Green Mountains, and it is no surprise that the resort and spa strive to be just as green as their setting. It would be difficult to find another spa so luxurious that is as firmly dedicated to the environment as Stowe. Measure and prepare all ingredients and set before you “mise en place” to keep things moving along. There are three parts to assemble — the Dashi broth, the soba noodles and the seared tuna. #1 BROTH (Dashi, or Japanese Fish Broth) • 1 cup of water • 3 - 4 pieces of Dashi Kombu (kelp) used only for flavor and then removed • 1/2 cup Bonito flakes • 1 cup of sake > Dashi is a broth and a staple used in many Japanese dishes. To make the broth, mix together the water, kombu and bonito flakes in a medium pot. > Bring broth to a boil over medium heat and cook until the volume is reduced in half. After 10-15 minutes, remove from heat. Avoid boiling with kelp, and don’t let the bonito flakes steep for too long – both could result in bitterness. > Strain the broth through a sieve to remove food parts, discard. > Place liquid back in pot. While still warm, add sake. Keep broth warm over super low heat. Next, prepare the noodles. #3 • • • • • SEARED TUNA & SOBA PREPARE THE TUNA 1 lb sushi grade Ahi Tuna (I get mine at Wild Edibles) Chinese 5 Spice Chili Powder Salt and Pepper Micro-greens/sprouts for taste and garnish #2 SOBA NOODLES • 1 package of soba noodles I prefer wild yam or lotus root for the added flavor they impart > Cook as directed, be sure not to over-cook > Make a Rub by mixing together a pinch or two of Chinese 5 Spice, Chili powder, black pepper, a bit of salt. Prepare enough to coat the piece of fish on each side. Rub olive oil over entire tuna and coat all sides of the tuna with the rub. > Place cast iron skillet over high heat. Do not put anything in the skillet; just get it nice and hot. Tip: You can buy the Bonito flakes and sea kelp in gourmet markets, Asian markets/ grocery stores or online. > Turn down the heat to medium and place fish in skillet. > Cook fish 2-4 minutes on all sides. When cooked to your liking, remove from skillet and place on cutting board. With a very sharp carving knife cut the fish across the grain in thin slices - the thinner the better. > Plating the dish: This works best in a dish that has a little depth (see photo). Place noodles in the center of the dish; go for the sculptural effect you often find in restaurants by placing the noodles in the dish with some height. Ladle about 1/2 cup of the broth over the noodles. The idea is not to completely cover the noodles in broth, so measure the broth based on the serving dish you are using. Place thinly sliced tuna over the noodles and garnish with micro greens (bean sprouts). Enjoy the exotic vibes in this sexy compilation that provides plenty of grooves for the globally-minded listener.
