COMPANY HISTORY HISTORIQUE DE LA SOCIÉTÉ Our History Ingwer Magnussen, a cabinetmaker by trade and businessman at heart, takes a bold step and starts his own company in the town of Kitchener, Ontario. The year is 1931 in the middle of the Great Depression. Carving intricate show wood for sofa frames, he supplies Canadian upholstery manufacturers from a converted chicken coop. In 1937 he moves his growing business into the first Magnussen Furniture production facility that also doubles as his living quarters. Manufacturing end tables, bookcases, desks and chairs, Magnussen Furniture grows on the core principals of trust, honesty, and respect. Ingwer’s son, Richard Magnussen, joins the company in 1970 at the age of 20. In 1975 Magnussen Furniture institutes profit sharing with its employees, driving productivity, quality, and pride. By 1977 the company has outgrown its current production facility and moves into a 35,000 sq. ft. plant in New Hamburg Ontario. As Vice President and General Manager, Richard’s focus on growth and expansion drives Magnussen Furniture to become Canada’s largest supplier of occasional tables. In 1981 Richard takes over the helm as President of Magnussen Furniture. In 1986 he founds Presidential Furniture, a division of Magnussen Furniture, to serve the U.S. market. Trading as Magnussen-Presidential Furniture, the company becomes one of the most progressive furniture suppliers in North America and turns its attention to sourcing in Asia, a full decade sooner than most manufacturers. The relationships, infrastructure and skills developed during this period enables the company to supply its customers with beautifully designed, quality made, value priced furnishings delivered at service levels unrivalled in the industry. In 2002, Magnussen-Presidential Furniture becomes Magnussen Home. The addition of “Home” defines our mission to create fine furniture for today’s lifestyles built by a family of craftsmen from around the world to enhance the most important rooms in your home. Magnussen Home continues to grow and expand as a global enterprise, still maintaining the core principles and values of a family-run business. The same principals Ingwer Magnussen started his business with in 1931 from a converted chicken coop. Trust, Honesty and Respect, they are the foundation of our success.
