In the Groom’s Honor Sandi Foraci Photography By Cori Meloney The groom’s cake is an old Southern tradition. Originally a dark fruit cake, it was displayed at the reception alongside the white wedding cake (the bride’s cake, if you will). It wasn’t served at the reception, though. The groom’s cake was cut into pieces and put into monogrammed boxes for guests to take home after the reception. The superstitious believed that single women who slept with a slice of the cake under their pillow would dream of their own weddings and future husbands. 48 | SOUTHERN MARYLAND WEDDINGS WINTER / SPRING 2009 |
