Wood Preservative Shell-Guard Shell-Guard is an EPA registered Glycol/Borate Wood Preservative. This new generation of preservative combines the well known effectiveness of borates with a glycol system that increases the penetration into the wood to enhance the action of the borate. Shell-Guard is easy to use, completely odorless and is a colorless, deeply penetrating wood preservative that requires just one application for the life of your home. Once applied to bare wood (free of dirt, mold/mildew, and previous coatings) with a brush or as a spray, it will kill those insects that eat wood such as wood boring beetles and termites. It also kills the types of fungi that are responsible for wood rot and decay. ShellGuard makes wood toxic to wood destroying organisms. Shell-Guard uses the moisture in the wood to penetrate the entire log and kill insects deep within the wood making it deadly to most wood predators. It also destroys fungi that cause wood rot and kills wood-destroying insects. The active ingredients of Shell-Guard are eaten by the insects and transported to their nesting sites to eliminate the insect colony. Alternatively, you can drill and inject Shell-Guard into insect galleries and hotspots. All previously painted or stained surfaces must be removed before applying Shell-Guard as these coatings will prevent the Shell-Guard from penetrating into the wood. Shell-Guard should only be applied when temperatures are between 40 and 90 degrees F. The best thing about Shell-Guard is that one application will last the life of your home as long as the exterior surfaces are maintained with a quality water resistant log finish such as Sikkens Cetol Log & Siding or Lifeline Ultra2. Shelf life for Shell-Guard is five years. ShellGuard should not be used with WOODguard Wood Preservative. Shell-Guard RTU is not for sale in California or Canada. Shell-Guard Concentrate is not for sale in Canada. minutes between applications. Shell-Guard RTU treated exterior wood should not be exposed to rain or snow for at least 24 hours after treatment. If necessary, cover freshly treated exterior wood with a tarp. Shell-Guard RTU should be allowed to dry for 1-3 days before applying an exterior finish. For best results apply an exterior finish over the Shell-Guard RTU within two weeks of the initial application. Coverage is 150-250 SF per gallon on bare wood. Shell-Guard Concentrate is shipped as a concentrate that contains 14% borate wood preservative. It is field mixed on a one to one basis with warm water. Stir or agitate the mixture until the Shell-Guard Concentrate is completely dissolved in the water. The product is then field applied to bare wood with a brush or a low pressure sprayer as per previous instructions. For remedial and preventative control of organisms attacking wood, apply the diluted solution of Shell-Guard Concentrate by brush, spray or dipping until the surface is thoroughly wet. All cut ends should be thoroughly soaked. Application may also be made by drilling and then injecting the solution under pressure into sound wood or until run-off is observed from entry/exit holes of infested wood. To minimize borate leaching, apply a water resistant sealer AFTER THE SURFACE IS DRY TO THE TOUCH. Two to four weeks are necessary for ShellGuard Concentrate to fully dry. During this time some of the borate may leach back out on to the surface of the logs. Prior to final log finishing any leached borates should be removed via pressure washing. Coverage is 215 SF per gallon on bare wood. 5 Gallon Concentrate 5 Gallon RTU - $347.75 - $206.75 Shell Guard RTU formula is shipped in a 2.5 Gallon Concentrate - $185.75 2.5 Gallon RTU 1 Gallon Concentrate 1 Gallon RTU - $118.75 - $ 102.75 - $ 84.75 Ready-to-Use format with no dilution or mixing required.
