J&P® IS A PROUD SPONSOR OF ANAMOSA, IA PUMPKINFEST! RYAN N OR M ORIA EN M N IVERS L N I A L TH AR 0 WE Y 2 IGH-OFF BE S R DW MO 4, 2 008 ANA P E EST WHOP The first Saturday in October each year, Anamosa celebrates fall with Pumpkinfest! Pumpkins ranging in size up to 1,662 pounds – yes, you read that correctly - are entered into the annual contest. J&P Cycles® is a proud sponsor of this great local event. The first Ryan Norlin Pumpkin Weigh-Off was held in Anamosa in 1988 after long-time pumpkin grower, Tom Norlin, decided to hold it to honor his late nephew Ryan, who lost his life earlier in the year in a boating accident. Ryan had helped Tom with the pumpkins since he was little. In 1993, Tom and other area pumpkin growers organized the Midwest Pumpkin Growers Association, which is affiliated with an international organization, the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth. That year, Anamosa was named the Pumpkin Capital of Iowa by the state Legislature. Year after year, this event has gotten larger and larger. The pumpkins have, too! This year’s 20th celebration was no exception. Again this year, J&P Cycles® was thrilled to sponsor the event and design the official logo for the event. The brochures were designed and printed in-house by the J&P Cycles® design team, as were the awards. Additionally, J&P® donated cash for the awards. Best Pumpkin, Gourd and Watermelon grower contests take place and people from across the country travel to the heartland of Eastern Iowa to compete in the pumpkin contest. Many of the pumpkins weigh over 1,000 pounds. In fact, this year’s pumpkin winner was Julie Young of Des Moines, with a gigantic pumpkin weighing in at 1,354.5 pounds. Other events for the weekend included a parade, chili cook-off contest, 5K run, scarecrow contest, big wheel races, a pancake breakfast and many other fun events for the entire family! No Pumpkinfest would be complete without the parade. For 2008, John and Jill Parham were asked to be the grand marshalls. The J&P® semi also participated and J&P® employees gave candy to the kids. Pumpkinfest Weigh-off winner Julie Young of Des Moines. “Pumpkinfest here in Anamosa has become such a wonderful family tradition. Everyone throughout the community looks forward to it each year,” said John Parham, J&P Cycles® president. “J&P Cycles® is truly honored to be a part of it, and look forward to it each year,” he added. “We were even more excited this year,” Jill says “as John and I served as grand marshals for this fabulous event.” PRICES & MISPRINTS SUBJECT TO CHANGE 84 J&P Cycles® GIFT Express 2008 ★ Order Toll-Free 24-7 ★ 1-800-397-4844 R S IA A, T OC MI O
