in the United States. With over 280,000 square feet of space, the show had over 800 exhibitors and over 200 bikes were entered into the bike show each year. (J&P® sold the show to R&B Promotions in 1999. The show is still in existence today but takes place at another location in Chicago.) In 1990 John also started a publishing company called Zacharia Advertising and Publications. Named after his son Zachary, the company began to produce a monthly newspaper called The Motorcycle Dispatch. The Dispatch covered motorcycle events and motorcycle news around the country. Zacharia also began publishing programs for the All Harley® Drag Race Association, the Super Series Bike Shows and the Flat Track racing events promoted by J&P® Promotions. In the late 90’s, Zacharia also brought back the only women's motorcycle magazine that had fallen on hard Zachary Parham got an early times. Harley® Women start in the motorcycle swap meet business helping to hand out magazine was J&P Cycles catalogs - 1996. purchased by John and published again under the new name of Asphalt Angels because the Harley-Davidson® motor company did not approve of a new owner using the Harley® name. The magazine quickly grew and was greatly appreciated by women who rode on their own. (Asphalt Angels was later sold to Thunder Press Publications when John made the decision to spend more time on the rapidly growing parts business, J&P Cycles®.) By 1991 J. Parham Enterprises encompassed Zacharia Advertising, J&P® Promotions, J&P Cycles® and Nostalgic Toy Creations. (Nostalgic Toy Creations followed John’s love of antique bikes and toys and produced die-cast motorcycle related collectible banks and cars.) Over 30 people were now employed at J&P Cycles® and the catalog had grown to 96 pages. Unfortunately it was the year that nearly put J&P Cycles® out of business and bankrupt. The business was growing too fast and could not keep up with the growth. John was spending more than he was bringing in so he decided to slow things down a bit. He began to really concentrate on building a strong foundation. Creating good procedures and hiring more knowledgeable people to help run the business. By far the largest help came in 1992 when John’s wife Jill left her job in Cedar Rapids to officially take over as J&P ® J&P Cycles Destination Daytona Retail Store Opened in June of 2007 Cycles® Vice President. Jill has been a huge part of J&P Cycles® success and she and John truly complement each other. While John has always been the one to look to the future and see new trends in the market and make the cash register ring, Jill is the one who keeps it all together. Overseeing Human Resources, Accounting and the day-today operations of the business, she has supported John every step of the way. Through the rest of 1990’s J. Parham Enterprises continued its steady growth and by 1998 over 70 people were employed. Everyone filled several hats to see that things continued growing and as J&P Cycles® slowly started to take center stage John decided it was the right time to start selling off J&P® Promotions events, retreating from the toy bank business, and do fewer publications through Zacharia. In 1996 he stopped printing the newspaper and starting printing more catalogs. By 1999, J&P Cycle's® building had been doubled in size. J&P Cycle's® catalog had reached 692 pages and they now employed almost 100 people. The Harley® bug was spreading like wildfire and it was the perfect time for J&P Cycles® to blossom. The year 2004 marked J&P Cycles® 25th anniversary. and what a year it was! Over 8,000 people attended J&P Cycles® 1-day celebration. J&P Cycles® was honored with several awards from industry leaders throughout the year and were very honored to be named Best Independent Dealer by Dealernews Magazine. Today John Parham's wildest dreams have become a reality. As J&P Cycles® plans to celebrate their 30th Anniversary, J&P Cycles® has grown into the world’s largest aftermarket retailer of parts and accessories for your Harley-Davidson®, Metric Cruiser and SportBike motorcycles. J&P Cycle's® headquarters in Anamosa, IA spans over 165,000 square feet. They employ over 300 people and are the largest private employer in Anamosa, and in Jones County, Iowa. Being a town of only 4,000 people in the cornfields of Iowa, Anamosa is a town that has become known around the world thanks to J&P Cycles®. In addition to their Iowa location J&P Cycles® also now operates a permanent retail store and call center in Ormond Beach, FL. The Destination Daytona Superstore is a 34,000 square foot facility that contains a 15,000 foot showroom with the one of the largest selections of motorcycle parts in the country. J&P Cycles® also owns more than a full city block on Lazelle Street in Sturgis, SD. Each year during the Sturgis Rally their lot is filled with the industry's must-see manufacturers, vendors, bike builders and more. The lot also contains not one, but two J&P Cycles® stores for both Harley-Davidson® and Metric motorcycles. The 2008 J&P Cycles® Harley® catalog is an astounding 1,144 pages. The J&P® Metric Cruiser and Touring parts catalog is also available the with over 420 pages of parts for Japanese Metric Cruisers and Gold Wing motorcycles and J&P’s Vintage Harley-Davidson® parts catalog is 336 pages. In 2007 J&P Cycles® also launched it’s first-ever SportBike catalog of 134 pages. The 2nd 2008 SportBike catalog recently hit customer's hands in June and is also 134 pages. In the fall of 2006, John was honored for his impact on the motorcycle industry by being inducted into the Sturgis The National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, IA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Nominated by Mike Corbin of Corbin Motors in Hollister, CA, John was chosen for his years of service and dedication to helping build the motorcycle industry into what it is today. Over the years John has also become greatly involved in antique motorcycles. He has become a very knowledgeable and avid collector. To John an antique motorcycle is a work of art telling a story of the time in history when it was built. John and Jill became members of the Antique Motorcycle Club of America in the late 1970’s and have been supporters ever since. John is noted for his knowledge and involvement in the antique motorcycle world and following this love has also been involved with the National Motorcycle Museum for over a decade. In the year 2000 John was asked to take over as President of the National Motorcycle Museum in Sturgis, SD. John soon realized that running the Museum from Iowa would never work. Plans were quickly put into motion to move the Museum to Anamosa, IA. With a newly renovated building, and lots of great display space, the Museum opened in May of 2001 and quickly began drawing visitors from around the country. In their first year of operations, the Museum was chosen by the Iowa Tourism Association as the attraction of the year. Under John’s supervision, the museum has thrived tremendously. As of September 2008, the Museum has continued on page 50 A view of J&P Cycles® in 2005 at the Annual Open House J&P Cycles® Sturgis Rally Store - 2005 Details see page 2 Place Your Order Online at: WWW.JPCYCLES.COM PRICES & MISPRINTS SUBJECT TO CHANGE 49
