THE PAUGHCO STORY Ron, son Bob and grandaughter Brittany Ron Paughco 1975 Chrome Shop The Paughco Shop Forty years ago when Paughco was formed, founder Bob “Pops” Paugh wasn’t focused on becoming one of the biggest and best suppliers of various motorcycle parts. Instead, Paugh was a tool and die maker who provided cutting edge technical and component support for the United States Department of Defense and aerospace industries. His son, Ron, was a motorcycle fanatic and began customizing Harley-Davidson® motorcycles in Southern California early on in the Southern California Chopper scene. When Boyd DeFrance, owner of the original D&D Cycle, asked if Paughco Tool and Die could reproduce the early H-D® stamped inner primary covers, he said sure, he had all the tools needed. Not only did he meet this challenge, the finished product was better and done faster than anyone had imagined. Bob wondered if other customers were in need of these parts as well. So, he made 500 of the early primaries, threw them in a Nomad Station wagon and set out for motorcycle enthusiasts to see if they’d sell. And, sell they did. Due to the response, he knew he had something and that’s when Paughco, Inc. was founded. They started with inner primaries and worked up from there. Now, their business includes pipes, gas tanks, handlebars, fenders, frames, wheel assemblies and more. When the business began, the company had a small shop in Hollwood, California. Today, Paughco is based in Carson City, Nevada and has grown progressively over the years. The company employs about 100 people in their 180,000 square foot building. The large Nevada facility has allowed the company to have all business operations handled under one roof. From unprecedented quality control to collaboration between designers, marketing, purchasing, it’s all done under one roof! Engineering teams work with the latest in computer-aided design (CAD) technology while state-of-the-art computer numerical control (CNC) machines work next to punch press, stamping and metal forming hardware. An on-site tool and die fabrication group works hand-in-hand with full time bike builders and product testing teams. Family has always been an important part of the business. While Bob passed away in the late 1980’s, Ron, who took over the reigns from his father after the new building was complete, is a large part of the business today along with his children. Ron’s son, Bob, keeps Paughco on the cutting edge of technology and computer integration. The key to Paughco’s success is staying up to date with trends – whatever they may be. Buddy Tucker, Paughco shipping manager says, “The key has been coming up with new product lines and keeping up with Vintage market. We try to stick with things that are in demand,” he adds. “Paughco is the world’s largest manufacturer and supplier of replacement and custom H-D® frames, Springer front ends and the ‘old school’ Chopper parts.” Their catalog features well over 1,000 frame combinations and more than 200 Springer variations.
