The simplest, most effective way to gain horsepower is to increase valve duration and lift with a set of Centerline’s Performance Camshafts. These cams work well on their own, but paired with our Big-Valve cylinder head and performance exhaust headers they will really let your engine breathe! We offer two exciting new options in 4-cylinder performance cams, our Euro+ cam and our 11.1 mm high performance cam. All of our cams are new, and feature nitriding (surface hardening) for durability in performance Alfa motors. For the single-cam V/6 engines, we offer Alfa’s excellent 164S camshafts. Performance Camshafts are intended for off-road use only, though engines with our camshafts have passed the Colorado State IM-240 pollution test for all-applicable years. There are no discounts on cams. When changing camshafts, carefully inspect your original camshafts and tappets. Lobes can become flat and will feel sharp because the leading edge of the lobe has worn. Tappets should show a smooth, circular wear pattern, but may be galled or pitted. A damaged lobe often means a damaged tappet and vice-versa. Damaged tappets will destroy a new cam. Our warranty only covers new cams when all tappets are replaced. Modern Engine Oils and Your Alfa’s Camshafts: You may have read articles about the removal of Zinc (actually, ZDDP, or Zinc Dithiophosphate) as an anti-wear additive in modern engine oils, and the problems this is presenting for older cars with flat-tappet valve trains. While we haven’t seen camshaft failures in Alfas caused by these new oil formulations, it certainly pays to be vigilant, do your own research, and seek out the best oil for your car, especially when breaking in new camshafts. We include Redline’s excellent Assembly Lube with each new camshaft sold, to ensure proper break-in. For even more protection, we also sell Redline’s New Engine Break-In Additive (see page 19), which can be added to conventional or synthetic oil for an extra dose of anti-wear additives. A positive offset is when the mounting face is outside of the wheel centerline. Negative offset is the opposite, with the mounting face inside of the wheel centerline. See example of a positive offset wheel below: wheel width With this formula you can figure out how to fit a wider, lower profile tire with little change in overall diameter. Thus you can improve grip while retaining speedometer accuracy. The formula for overall tire diameter is: (Cross section width x Aspect ratio) x 2 + Wheel Diameter = Overall Tire Diameter 25.4 As an example,let’s use the original tire size on a Giulietta: 155/78 – 15. 155 Approximate cross section width in millimeters. 78 Aspect ratio which is converted to “0.78” 15 Wheel diameter in inches. (155 x 0.78) 25.4 x 2 + 15 = 24.52" C L offset mounting face for hub front (street side) The tire size we would like to use is 185/65 – 15. If we plug in the new tire size into our formula, we get: (185 x 0.65) 25.4 x 2 + 15 = 24.47" These two diameters are very close, so speedometer accuracy and final drive ratio would be unchanged by changing from a 155/78 – 15 to a 185/65 – 15 but the tire contact patch would be much enlarged for improved handling and braking. Speed Rating Identification The speed rating of a tire is the maximum speed that it is safely capable of sustaining for extended periods. This is denoted by a letter code, which will appear on the tire sidewall in one of three ways: 205/60 HR–14 205/60 HR–14 89H 205/60 R–14 89H The rating code is as follows: Q =100 MPH H = 130 MPH V = 149 MPH S = 112 MPH T = 118 MPH Z = 149+ MPH U = 124 MPH “R” refers to radial construction. “89” is a load rating index. Tire Size 205/60 – 14: 205 The approximate cross section width of the tire in millimeters. 60 The ratio between the height of the tire and the cross section width. The sidewall of this tire is 60% as high as it is wide.
