Together, WSD and Trek’s extensive line of standardproportion bikes assure a comfortable riding experience for virtually everyone. Visit us to see which Trek bike is the perfect bike for you and your riding needs. Women Specific Design (WSD): A woman’s perspective Now there’s a bicycle to fit virtually every woman on the planet. Some women fit a man’s bike just fine. But it’s high time to extend the comfort range that men enjoy to the rest of us. Beyond anatomically-sensitive saddle shapes. It’s time for those of us with smaller hands, shorter torsos and narrower shoulders than a man, to stop punishing ourselves and start celebrating our bicycling bodies, from ankle to pelvis to head. WSD introduces women-friendly components greater comfort, support and efficiency. Cycling and Women Bicycling was originally for men when bikes had huge front wheels requiring great strength to manage. Bikes with equal-sized wheels emerged in the 1880s, and women fell in love with their agility and ease of riding. Men sneered at first, then ditched their tippy old high-wheelers. Love your bike, love the road Serious performance details combine to create Trek’s smartly-designed women’s-specific bikes that are ready to tackle miles on the road. Comfort reigns on the 1.2 WSD road bike, and you’ll quickly fall in love with your new ride. 1.2 WSD $770 Women’s-specific seat and frame geometry for total body comfort Proportionally smaller bars and brake levers increase comfort and performance Women’s clothing changed forever when cycling made corsets, petticoats and billowing skirts obsolete. In came the bold and scandalous “bloomers.” Cities and health helped women ride. As cities grew, bikes became more practical than horses. Then, Trek offers dozens of WSD bikes. Browse this guide to learn more. Look’s design innovation and quality give you the same performance and safety benefits as the best European pro riders. Available in red, graphite, or white (laneo) Super-strong reinforced polymid body Pedal and Cleat Care Clipless pedals have greatly improved cycling. “Clipless” pedals made obsolete older styles that used a leather or nylon strap (the “clip”) to secure the foot to the pedal. With modern clipless pedals, a cyclist’s shoe steps into the bike’s pedals, much like a ski boot steps into a binding. These pedals release easily, but also keep a rider’s feet attached to the pedals, making riding safer and more efficient. It’s critical to properly affix the cleats to the shoe—mounting a cleat in the wrong position can lead to overuse injuries. If you need assistance, come by the shop and we’ll be happy to help. Pedals allow your foot to rotate (or “float”) slightly throughout the pedal stroke, which helps prevent injury. If you hear squeaking while pedaling, or find it difficult to clip out of the pedal, then a drop of lube on the cleat can help. You can also adjust pedal tension to make it easier or more difficult to clip out of the pedal. After you’ve ridden for some time with clipless pedals, you may want to tighten them up slightly. Any time the cleat becomes noticeably worn or you find it excessively easy to rotate out of the pedal, it’s probably time to change. We’ve got replacements here at the shop, so drop by to get set up or to upgrade your system. Some pedals even come with a sticker to help you replace a cleat. The sticker is an outline of the cleat and goes on the sole of the shoe over the old one. Once you remove the old cleat, you can then line the new one up in the same position. A Look Original—the “Floating” Cleat KéO red cleats offer nine degrees of float, or rotation, allowing your leg its most natural path when pedaling. Increased float helps prevent injuries and will keep you riding long-term. - All pedals come with Grey cleats for 4.5 degrees of float - Black cleats for no float are also available - Delta cleats still available for replacement Memory Clip cleat position allows you to install a new cleat in exactly the same position as the previous cleat NEW Grip Cleat gives you a molded, non-slip rubber grip surface that improves walkability off the bike All L All Look ook k pedals ped dals l feature feature t al lower ower h height ei ight ht between between t the th t he a axle xle l and d sol sole le for f optimal opti timal l pedaling ped dali ling power and d effi efficiency. ffici iency. His passion and know-how shine in the 2008 line: the most cutting edge, fun-to-ride mountain bikes from Fisher. Ever. Off-Road Survival Tips Steep descents. Get more control by lowering your seat and staying as far back as possible so your center of gravity is over both wheels. Steep ascents. Distribute your weight evenly onto both wheels. This prevents wheelies (when your weight is too far back) and loss of rear-tire traction (when your weight’s too far forward). To maintain momentum, stay in an easy gear with high pedal RPMs. And shift early, rather than wait until changing conditions make pedaling difficult. Braking. When slowing, use both brakes, slightly emphasizing the rear break. Since 70% of your braking power comes from the front brake, use it gently so you don’t get catapulted over the handlebars. Favor the rear brake on steep descents. Keep a firm, relaxed grip. Clenching the bars too tightly causes arm fatigue. To ride over curbs or obstacles, lean back, unweight your front tire and lift it over the obstacle by pulling up on your handlebars, smoothly shifting your weight forward and lifting up with your feet to unweight the rear wheel. Practice this technique in the back yard or sidewalk before you try it on the trail. Pedaling as you go over a bump also keeps you “lighter” on the bike. Tire pressure. Using less pressure results in better traction and a smoother ride, but increases your chances for a flat. Higher pressure results in more speed, but less comfort on bumpy trails. On smooth roads, you can still be comfortable at maximum pressure. Just say “No.” Don’t ride beyond your ability. If the trail looks difficult, walk it. You can always come back and try it again. Big-wheel performance, small-wheel weight Fisher solves the 29er dilemma with the Superfly – it’s lighter, stiffer and handles beautifully with G2 Geometry. Nicknamed “Miracle Boy,” Dave could show up at a contest without riding for two weeks and still win. Come in and ride one of his bikes; you’ll want to ride every day. Can you believe this guy has been competing and winning for 15 years? Dave Mirra has a natural ability to create, adapt and push tricks and ideas—like his signature nohand 360 flip. Dave knows bikes. He knows what works, and his new line is here. X Games: Big Air and Big Bucks BMX cycling (short for Bicycle Motocross) exploded in prominence at the ESPN Extreme Games in Rhode Island in June 1995. Almost 200,000 spectators watched athletes compete in 27 events in nine sports categories. In 1996, after the enthusiastic response of spectators, sponsors and athletes, the event was renamed the X Games and enjoyed an even larger crowd in Rhode Island. In 1997, Winter Games were added and the X Games III moved to San Diego, attracting over 220,000 fans and presenting a 10-story snowboard jump made of hundreds of tons of man-made snow. In Paris, France, X games Xperience was held in conjunction with Eurosport. 2002 saw steady X Games growth in the USA with a new Asian X Games qualifier in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Latin X games in Rio de Janiro, Brazil. For 2008, the X Games will be July 31 through August 3 in Los Angeles, days before many of the athletes leave for the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. How much $ do these guys make? As TV exposure grew in the late 1990s, X Game competitors gained mainstream acceptance. This prominence and the substantial spending power of their youthful audience made top names like Dave Mirra and Tony Hawk extremely valuable to major corporations. The result: Top X Game athletes now earn many millions of dollars a year. The Ionos sets the standard in terms of design and performance. Ionos $225 A snug, comfortable fit is one of the most important factors in choosing a new bicycle helmet. Every brand has a slightly different shape and feel. Road helmets tend to be lightest and most vented. Mountain helmets weigh slightly more but are more substantial, with visors and more coverage for the back of your head. Visors help deflect wind, rain, sun and even branches. They’re usually worn for mountain biking, but are also useful on the road. Retention systems on the backs of helmets improve stability while leaving room for ponytails or long hair. Wisconsin-based, family-owned, Saris is passionate about cycling and helping you travel with your bike. The Italian designs are functional, good-looking and a great value. Stop in to appreciate how easy these racks are to use. Tips for Rear Mounted Bike Racks Sized for road or mountain bike wheels Clean your car’s surface of grit before you attach a trunk-mounted rack. Specially-shaped bike frames sometimes require accessory beams that create virtual top tubes. Strap wheels so they don’t spin, and secure your bars. For long trips, or through bad weather, wrap your drivetrain in cling wrap and tape or bungee it in place. Ground clearance below the bike wheels should be at least 12 inches so you clear driveways and ramps. Mounts to 1¼" or 2" hitches Hold-down and anti sway straps ratchet for easy tightening Each tray pivots up to hold bike securely by the front wheel so that your hands are free to quickly and easily secure the ratcheting straps and hit the road. The rear-most bike should be highest. Either angle the rack upward or put the smallest bike on back. Stay clear of your tail pipe with bike wheels. Hot exhaust can ruin a tire. Make sure your turn signals, brake lights and license plate are visible with bikes on your rack. It’s the law. Some rack makers offer license plate re-locators. Remove your pedals on long trips if it helps bikes pack closer with fewer scratches. Frequently check your rack as you drive to make sure wind and road vibration haven’t loosened it. If you install a trailer hitch exclusively for a bike rack (not to tow a trailer), don’t install the wiring harness. This can help with car resale and warranty. Avoid last minute panic. Try attaching your rack to your car a few days BEFORE your trip. You can double check that you have all the parts and that the rack fits securely. You’ll have time to call us if any questions arise. Be especially careful over bumps. No rack is as stable as the car itself, and none are certified for off-road use. The Bones – #1 rear rack in America From classics like the VW Bug or a GM sedan, to up tempo cars like the Audi TT, the Bones doesn’t miss a note fitting over spoilers, onto rear decks or even on the back of mini vans. Faster. Further. Test Your Power—Improve Your Riding THE POWER TEST The CycleOps Power Test determines your threshold power—a starting point for getting fitter, a frame of reference for getting faster, and a measuring tool for going further. WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR A POWER TEST? We have everything here at the shop to perform your power test. Just bring in your riding gear: your shoes, shorts, a shirt and maybe a water bottle. It won’t be an all-out effort, but it will be important to be aware of your perceived effort. Keep the scale at right in mind: With this 20-minute test, we’ll gauge your power and be able to use the information to make you a better cyclist. WHAT IS POWER? Power output is the product of how hard you push on the pedals multiplied by how fast you are pedaling. It’s the amount of work or energy you expend in a given time frame. Power (watts) = torque (in lbs.) x cadence (rpms) CycleOps Power has cycling down to a science. Take a 20-minute CycleOps Power Test in our store, to determine your threshold power, and you’ll have an informative starting point for getting fitter, a frame of reference for getting faster, and a measuring tool for going further. HOW DO WE MEASURE IT? PowerTap technology is the leading power measurement technology for cycling and fitness. It uses 8 strain gauges embedded in the rear hub for +/- 1.5% accuracy. To produce more power you can either push harder or pedal faster. The higher your power output, the faster you go. Wattage Training: More Accurate and Effective The development of wattage training with power meters has revolutionized the way we ride bikes. In the 1980s, heart rate monitors were heralded—justifiably—as a leap in training methods. Cyclists improved performance by monitoring heart rate during training rides and races. Heart-rate training, though, has its pitfalls: it fluctuates depending on a rider’s fitness level, with possible illness, ambient temperature, and even diet. This variability makes it impossible to accurately and consistently gauge one’s performance. By the mid 1990s, engineers solved this problem by standardizing a means for monitoring a cyclist’s output or workload—with wattage. Power meters measure the watts generated by a working cyclist. If a rider knows she or he can generate 200 watts for 15 minutes on a given climb, then that figure acts a marker for future efforts. Produce 175 watts a week later and you know you’re putting out less power; crank out 225 watts and rest assured you’re stronger. There’s nothing subjective about it; wattage tells you if you are putting more power to the pedals—or not. Having an accurate, dependable gauge for your workload allows pinpoint accuracy in training. Rather than relying on heart rate—which can fluctuate as much as 10 beats from day to day—wattage facilitates training at specific intensities and acts as a consistent ruler upon which to measure performance gains. Passionate cyclists and sports physiologists have proven there’s no more effective means to improve cycling than a power meter, making it an indispensable tool for the modern performance rider. Visit our shop to learn more about the benefits of using a power meter. “A Power Test is the starting point of a good training program.” Robbie Ventura, Vision Quest Coach and pro cycling veteran Know your power, all the time. Recover. After a tough ride inside or out, an easy spin at roughly 80 to 90 RPM can work out the lactic acid in your legs. Interval sessions. After a warm-up of 10 to 15 minutes, crank up to hard intervals lasting between one and five minutes, with one to two-minute recovery sessions in between. This builds your overall stamina. Cool down for roughly 10 minutes. Anaerobic threshold fun. Warm up for 10 to 15 minutes, then hold a hard but steady pace at some resistance for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool down for roughly 10 minutes. One-legged drills. Pedal with just one foot while the other rests on a chair next to your trainer. Aim for smooth strokes at a high RPM for 30 seconds or so, then switch legs. As you improve, increase the duration of each leg. This improves your overall pedaling efficiency. No matter what workout you’re doing indoors, it’s important to maintain good form and a smooth pedal stroke. Longtime pro and member of Team US Postal, Robbie Ventura, is now retired and coaching. Modern lubricants reduce wear on bike parts, improve performance and in many instances are safe for the environment. There are a variety of “lubes” on the market today and making the right choice depends on the conditions in which you ride and what you’re lubricating. If you live in a predominantly dry environment, a lightweight, “dry” lube can be a great choice. These formulae often go on wet and the base in which the lube resides evaporates. This leaves the chain dry, but with a coating of friction-fighting compounds. For humid or wet conditions, consider a heavier lube. These resist being washed off and offer greater protection. Apply lubricant by putting a drop around each pin. Back pedal the chain for a minute to work the lube in between the plates and Bushing around the bushings. A judicious application Inner Plate Outer Plate is the rule. Pin Apply a coat, Metal-to-metal then wipe off friction causes wear (note groove in pin). excess so it won’t attract dirt. In addition to a bike’s chain, the cables, derailleur pulleys and pedal cleats need adequate lubrication. Inside the cable housing, you can usually use a heavier “wet” lube. Regular treatment of cables dramatically improves shifting and reduces wear. You may want to look for “green” formulae that are biodegradable and avoid the use of chemicals that can pollute water resources. These new earth-friendly compounds really work and they’re easier on the environment, too. D. GO! GO! is Pedro’s new super clean lube for clean riding conditions. Look for SRAM components. Chicago-based SRAM now offers you a third alternative to Japan and Italy for components. SRAM’s Force and Rival groups share Red’s technologies and performance, using less-expensive materials. SRAM’s trail equipment, X-O, is fast becoming the new standard in mountain biking, too. Feeling is believing—come by and check out the new alternative—SRAM! Cyclingnews.com’s readers* call SRAM Red: “Best Product”— Two Years Running! SRAM’s Red component group shatters expectations starting with the newest innovation: DoubleTap shifting. Red is also history’s lightest road gruppo featuring cycling’s widest use of new materials: carbon fiber, titanium, magnesium and even ceramic. Ridden to victory in the 2008 Tour of California and in use by international pro teams: Astana, Saunier Duval-Scott, Bissell and Kelly Benefits-Medifast, SRAM Red sets a new standard in road componentry. * www.cyclingnews.com/features/2007/awards07/?id=product Pedal Like a Pro Elite riders are not only strong, fast and fit, they maximize every effort with a smooth, efficient pedal stroke. By learning techniques to pedal smarter, not harder, your riding will become much more efficient. Here’s how: 1. Proper cleat position. This is critical in maximizing each pedal stroke and avoiding knee injury. Come see us to make sure your cleats are in the best position possible. In general, the ball of your foot should be positioned directly over the pedal axle, and the angular fit should be close to your natural foot angle. 2. Smooth and efficient pedaling. Rather than an up-and-down motion, you want to apply power through the entire stroke cycle. 3. High RPMs. Pro riders (like Lance) have proven that turning fast, high RPMs is more efficient than cranking in a big gear. Work on maintaining 85 to 95 RPM. This also puts less stress on your knees and is better for building cardiovascular fitness. 4. Keep your upper body still. It’s your legs that power the bike, so don’t waste energy elsewhere by bobbing back and forth, pulling too hard on the handlebars or gripping them too tightly with your hands. Look at the pros. They keep their hips stable and maintain a firm, but relaxed torso. You may not join the pro peloton after mastering these skills, but making your pedal strokes more efficient will certainly improve your riding. Red, Force, or Rival— Ask for SRAM components on your next bike The three SRAM component groups share these technologies: DoubleTap shifting is the most significant SRAM road bike feature. Elegantly simple, it allows you to shift up or down with the single motion of a single lever from wherever you are on your handlebars. The shift and brake levers have independent pivot points to avoid unintentional shifting or braking. All of this is achieved in a lighter, less bulky brake lever with fewer moving parts and asymmetrical ergonomic shaping. Adjustable-reach brake levers have fine-tuning for heightened stopping power and comfort. Exact Actuation delivers unsurpassed precision in rear derailleur movement from cog to cog. The result is more consistent, precise travel for smoother, faster, shifting across all 10 gears. SRAM groups rethink lightweight performance SRAM Red Group The latest technologies and lightest materials are highlighted in the carbon crank with ceramic bearings, rear derailleur with carbon, titanium and ceramic, and of course, the ultimate DoubleTap control. SRAM Force Group Lighter than Dura-Ace, comparable to Record. Carbon and aluminum crank, carbon and magnesium rear derailleur, DoubleTap lever with carbon, titanium and magnesium. SRAM Rival Group Aluminum and steel materials, similar design as Red for high performance, with an eye towards keeping cost down. . and Redefines the Trail Tougher for 2008—X-O Group The SRAM X-O Group offers you the world’s lightest shifters and a pared-down rear derailleur for exceptional precision. The group features striking attention to detail, with
<a10:updated>2008-06-20T22:41:52+02:00</a10:updated>

Revolution Cycles Page 21

Enlighten Your Riding Experience CatEye is the world leader in cycling electronics. The company has the largest range of Fototec™ lenses—they change with the light conditions—in the industry. Tifosi’s tough, good-looking glasses feature interchangeable lenses and adjustable nose- and earpads, all at very competitive values. Ready to rock Named after the brutal mountain ascent in the Provence Tour de France region of France, these glasses are ready for anything. They weigh just 25 grams and are protecting the eyes of pro riders worldwide. Fit medium to large faces best. Ventoux $59.95 Shown here: Laser Silver A Lens for Every Purpose Come with three lenses for varying light conditions Also available with Fototec™ lenses Cycling sunglasses not only offer protection from the elements and from harmful UV rays, they offer different-colored tints for specific use. Manufacturers design their lines to maximize each tint—and often offer interchangeable lenses to give you options—so you get the most from your sunglasses whether you’re riding on roads, trails, in full sunlight or on overcast days. Here’s the low-down on what lenses work best in what conditions: Road cycling lenses tend to be darker than lenses made for mountain biking, and generally use a red tint to filter out blue light and glare. Lenses for off-road use an orange or amber tint that also reduces the blue light that causes glare. The orange or amber tint increases contrast on the trail so that every obstacle pops out a little more than if you weren’t wearing glasses. For both road and trail, brown tints improve depth perception and reduce glare. These lenses are good for variable conditions. The dark tint reduces eyestrain. Gray or smoke-tinted lenses keep colors in their most natural, unfiltered state, while reducing eye strain. For low-light conditions, like a cloudy day, yellow, red or orange help protect your eyes and create contrast. Clear lenses don’t provide contrast, but keep your eyes protected from wind, bugs and other outside factors. The Tough Tifosi Test Ventilated lens increases airflow and reduces fogging Shown here: Pearl White Tuck into the slipstream The smooth lines and sleek look of these glasses make you feel like you’re cheating the wind. Sidi shoes are the crucial link between you and your bike, channeling your power to your machine. This page can describe Sidi’s innovations, materials and designs, but it cannot convey how well these shoes fit. Sidi confirms the mystery of performance footwear that comes with almost barefoot comfort, good looks and fun-to-wear features. Feeling is believing. Come in, and try some on. Sidi shoes fit most major pedal systems and range from $134 to $463. Sidi enters the 21st Century cherishing old world craftsmanship, embracing high-tech materials and steadfast in its passion for design and performance. Cyclists’ reverence for the quality and fit of Sidi shoes, handmade in Northern Italy for almost 50 years, makes Sidi the brand to which all other cycling shoes are compared. Come in and see why so many of us, our customers and the world’s pro cyclists ride in Sidi. Sign Up and Focus Having a goal, like an upcoming race or century ride, can rejuvenate your training. Choose an event by searching the web, asking around or talking with us. With every ride you take, you'll have a newfound purpose in preparing for the big day. Here are some tips on getting prepared. Train. Now’s the time to focus. Develop a specific training schedule – buy a book, hire a coach, search online – that has you reaching peak fitness and form. Make training a priority. Train your stomach. Train with whatever nutrition (bars, gels, energy drinks) you want to use the day of your event. You don’t want to discover that something upsets your stomach during your race or big ride. When you make your living riding all day long for weeks on end – you don’t compromise on your footwear. That’s why so many pro riders choose Sidi. Beyond unsurpassed comfort, Sidi road shoes focus on performance with as-you’re-riding adjustment, ventilation, and a very firm sole for maximum power transfer to the pedals. Do this two weeks out so that any fixes, or parts that need to be ordered, can be done in time for you to get back on your bike before the event. Pack early. Lay out your gear ahead of time to make sure you don’t forget anything (Helmet? Water bottle or hydration pack?). Pack your toolkit and inventory your nutrition. Eat well. Many events have carboloading dinners the night before, but don’t overload. Your body won’t be used to digesting an excess amount of food, and you’ll feel sluggish in the morning. Rest well. Get a good night’s sleep the night before the event. Set a failsafe alarm that’s loud enough so you have to get up to turn it off. Relax and have fun. On the day of the big event, enjoy the excitement. Live in the moment, knowing you are doing the best you can. Sidi on the trail Sidi mountain bike shoes adapt the proven fit and pedaling features of Sidi road shoes to the rougher environment of dirt and rocky trails. The biggest difference is a sole that works hard off the bike. Its deep tread provides traction for scrambling on irregular surfaces and a softer flex makes walking easier. Some models have replaceable sole tread. It’s easy to drip or spray lube (under $9) to keep your chain quiet, shifting well and lasting longer. Ask us which lube is best for your needs. Seat height, tilt and fore-aft position are important for your comfort, AND they’re the easiest adjustments. Often all you need is a single Allen wrench. We’re glad to show you how. He’s been building frames and components since the 1970s. This season, Bontrager has seriously stepped up quality and ingenuity across every category. The right combination delivers biomechanical efficiency and rock-solid performance—Shimano has race-tested thousands of different iterations of shoes and pedals, so rest assured you’re getting the best equipment possible. A stiff, efficient carbon sole transmits power to the pedal. Men’s Road Performance Shoe, SH-R220 $249.99 Cycling shoes have evolved as essentials for safety and performance. Nineteenth-century cycling shoes offered minimal support and no secure attachment to the bike. Toe “clips”, a nylon or leather strap over the top of the foot, improved the rider’s connection to the pedal and eventually employed a cleat nailed to the sole for further security. These immovable cleats were replaced by adjustable models in the 1980s. Rigid soles of hardened leather or even wood, improved cycling shoes’ transfer of energy to the pedals. Plastic, and now carbon soles further improve the shoe-pedal system. “Clipless” pedals added a new level of efficiency, comfort and security in the 1980s. Designs as early as 1895 previewed the debut of the Look pedal in 1984, which adapted ski industry technology to pedals, allowing easy step in/twist out. Shimano’s SPD system used a much smaller, recessed cleat to enable easier walking and off-road use. New designs continue to improve comfort and biomechanical efficiency. By the early ‘90s, adjustable cleats allowed riders to fine-tune position and soon rotational “float” accommodated every rider’s individual pedaling style. The latest innovation is custom-fit shoes for an individual cyclist’s foot. Footbeds can be made custom by a podiatrist and at least one manufacturer, Shimano, offers a shoe and footbed that can be molded at Shimano-certified shops with trained staff. The shoe and its liner are heated and then formed to the wearer’s foot in minutes, providing improved comfort and efficiency. Come see us for assistance with selecting the best system and fit for your needs. Molded vents in the heel and toe cap allow ventilation A micro-adjust buckle and dual offset straps stabilize the foot Stiff, lightweight carbon transfers energy to the pedal efficiently Light, stiff, comfortable— everything a shoe should be The shoe-pedal interface is critical in cycling, and Shimano uses an anatomical last and carbon sole for top performance in the R131. Compatible with SPD or Look Keo pedals, the 131 is efficient and lightweight.
