Modern lubricants reduce wear on bike parts, improve performance and in many instances are safe for the environment. There are a variety of “lubes” on the market today and making the right choice depends on the conditions in which you ride and what you’re lubricating. If you live in a predominantly dry environment, a lightweight, “dry” lube can be a great choice. These formulae often go on wet and the base in which the lube resides evaporates. This leaves the chain dry, but with a coating of friction-fighting compounds. For humid or wet conditions, consider a heavier lube. These resist being washed off and offer greater protection. Apply lubricant by putting a drop around each pin. Back pedal the chain for a minute to work the lube in between the plates and Bushing around the bushings. In addition to a bike’s chain, the cables, derailleur pulleys and pedal cleats need adequate lubrication. Inside the cable housing, you can usually use a heavier “wet” lube. Regular treatment of cables dramatically improves shifting and reduces wear. You may want to look for “green” formulae that are biodegradable and avoid the use of chemicals that can pollute water resources.
