Indoor training doesn’t have to be boring. By changing up your workouts or popping in a training DVD, you’ll be improving your fitness, form and overall riding efficiency. Once you get back outside, you’ll notice improvements. Here are a few ideas to maximize your indoor efforts. Practice race tactics. With a DVD like Robbie Ventura’s “Race Day,” time will not only fly by, but you’ll learn race tactics like drafting, breaking away and bridging the gap while training your legs to work at race pace. Recover. After a tough ride inside or out, an easy spin at roughly 80 to 90 RPM can work out the lactic acid in your legs. Interval sessions. After a warm-up of 10 to 15 minutes, crank up to hard intervals lasting between one and five minutes, with one to two-minute recovery sessions in between. This builds your overall stamina. Cool down for roughly 10 minutes. Anaerobic threshold fun. Warm up for 10 to 15 minutes, then hold a hard but steady pace at some resistance for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool down for roughly 10 minutes. One-legged drills. Pedal with just one foot while the other rests on a chair next to your trainer. Aim for smooth strokes at a high RPM for 30 seconds or so, then switch legs. As you improve, increase the duration of each leg. This improves your overall pedaling efficiency.
