Further. Test Your Power—Improve Your Riding THE POWER TEST The CycleOps Power Test determines your threshold power—a starting point for getting fitter, a frame of reference for getting faster, and a measuring tool for going further. WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR A POWER TEST? We have everything here at the shop to perform your power test. Just bring in your riding gear: your shoes, shorts, a shirt and maybe a water bottle. It won’t be an all-out effort, but it will be important to be aware of your perceived effort. Keep the scale at right in mind: With this 20-minute test, we’ll gauge your power and be able to use the information to make you a better cyclist. WHAT IS POWER? Power output is the product of how hard you push on the pedals multiplied by how fast you are pedaling. It’s the amount of work or energy you expend in a given time frame. Power (watts) = torque (in lbs.) x cadence (rpms) CycleOps Power has cycling down to a science. Take a 20-minute CycleOps Power Test in our store, to determine your threshold power, and you’ll have an informative starting point for getting fitter, a frame of reference for getting faster, and a measuring tool for going further. HOW DO WE MEASURE IT? PowerTap technology is the leading power measurement technology for cycling and fitness. It uses 8 strain gauges embedded in the rear hub for +/- 1.5% accuracy. To produce more power you can either push harder or pedal faster. The higher your power output, the faster you go. Wattage Training: More Accurate and Effective The development of wattage training with power meters has revolutionized the way we ride bikes. In the 1980s, heart rate monitors were heralded—justifiably—as a leap in training methods. Cyclists improved performance by monitoring heart rate during training rides and races. Heart-rate training, though, has its pitfalls: it fluctuates depending on a rider’s fitness level, with possible illness, ambient temperature, and even diet. This variability makes it impossible to accurately and consistently gauge one’s performance. By the mid 1990s, engineers solved this problem by standardizing a means for monitoring a cyclist’s output or workload—with wattage. Power meters measure the watts generated by a working cyclist. If a rider knows she or he can generate 200 watts for 15 minutes on a given climb, then that figure acts a marker for future efforts. Produce 175 watts a week later and you know you’re putting out less power; crank out 225 watts and rest assured you’re stronger. There’s nothing subjective about it; wattage tells you if you are putting more power to the pedals—or not. Having an accurate, dependable gauge for your workload allows pinpoint accuracy in training. Rather than relying on heart rate—which can fluctuate as much as 10 beats from day to day—wattage facilitates training at specific intensities and acts as a consistent ruler upon which to measure performance gains. Passionate cyclists and sports physiologists have proven there’s no more effective means to improve cycling than a power meter, making it an indispensable tool for the modern performance rider.
