Bikes from the Legend Himself Freestyle legend Dave Mirra is the most decorated X Games rider in history with 11 gold medals and 14 total. Nicknamed “Miracle Boy,” Dave could show up at a contest without riding for two weeks and still win. Come in and ride one of his bikes; you’ll want to ride every day. Can you believe this guy has been competing and winning for 15 years? Dave Mirra has a natural ability to create, adapt and push tricks and ideas—like his signature nohand 360 flip. Dave knows bikes. He knows what works, and his new line is here. X Games: Big Air and Big Bucks BMX cycling (short for Bicycle Motocross) exploded in prominence at the ESPN Extreme Games in Rhode Island in June 1995. Almost 200,000 spectators watched athletes compete in 27 events in nine sports categories. In 1996, after the enthusiastic response of spectators, sponsors and athletes, the event was renamed the X Games and enjoyed an even larger crowd in Rhode Island. In 1997, Winter Games were added and the X Games III moved to San Diego, attracting over 220,000 fans and presenting a 10-story snowboard jump made of hundreds of tons of man-made snow. In Paris, France, X games Xperience was held in conjunction with Eurosport. 2002 saw steady X Games growth in the USA with a new Asian X Games qualifier in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Latin X games in Rio de Janiro, Brazil. For 2008, the X Games will be July 31 through August 3 in Los Angeles, days before many of the athletes leave for the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. How much $ do these guys make? As TV exposure grew in the late 1990s, X Game competitors gained mainstream acceptance. This prominence and the substantial spending power of their youthful audience made top names like Dave Mirra and Tony Hawk extremely valuable to major corporations. The result: Top X Game athletes now earn many millions of dollars a year.
